The Guernsey County Sheriff’s Office is seeking dedicated, OPOTA-certified professionals to serve as full-time Deputy Sheriffs. Deputies play a critical role in protecting the community, enforcing the law, and supporting public safety operations across the county. Your Role as a Guernsey County Deputy Sheriff
Deputy Sheriffs perform a wide range of law enforcement duties in both routine and high-risk situations. Responsibilities include:
- Patrol operations and proactive community policing
- Responding to calls for service including emergencies, crimes in progress, and public assistance
- Conducting traffic enforcement, crash investigations, and roadway safety operations
- Investigating criminal activity and preparing reports and case documentation
- Maintaining public order at events, incidents, and emergency scenes
- Executing warrants, transporting prisoners, and assisting with court-related duties
- Participating in emergency response efforts including severe weather, search-and-rescue, and disaster situations
- Engaging with the community to build trust and promote safety initiatives
- Maintaining equipment, certifications, and departmental standards
- Representing the Sheriff’s Office with professionalism and integrity
Who We’re Looking For
We are seeking committed individuals ready to serve in a full-time law enforcement capacity. Candidates must:
- Hold a valid Ohio OPOTA Basic Peace Officer certification
- Be at least 21 years old
- Possess a valid Ohio driver’s license
- Pass a comprehensive background investigation and agency screening
- Be physically and mentally capable of performing essential job duties
- Demonstrate strong ethics, professionalism, and teamwork
Prior law enforcement, military, or public safety experience is preferred but not required beyond OPOTA certification.
Training and Support
Deputy Sheriffs receive ongoing training and development, including:
- Orientation to GCSO policies, procedures, and operational standards
- Advanced law enforcement training and certifications
- Firearms and defensive tactics training
- Emergency response and incident management training
- Continuous in-service training to maintain OPOTA compliance
Uniforms and equipment are provided in accordance with agency policy.
Work Schedule and Commitment
This is a full-time position requiring flexibility and commitment. Deputies may work:
- Rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Scheduled patrol assignments and specialized details
- Overtime assignments as needed
- Emergency call-outs and critical incident responses
