SCAM ALERT – PLEASE SHARE

The Guernsey County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam currently circulating in our area.
Scammers are calling people and pretending to be members of the Guernsey County Sheriff’s Office. In some cases, the caller is identifying himself as Lt. Brian Carpenter.
Lt. Brian Carpenter is a real deputy with our office, but he is NOT making these calls.
The scammers are telling people they failed to report for jury duty and must pay a fine immediately. They then attempt to collect money over the phone.
In a recent report to our dispatch center, a victim was contacted by someone claiming to be with the Columbus Police Department and was again told they had failed to report for jury duty. The caller instructed the victim to pay the fine using gift cards.
The scammers even provided the real phone number for the Columbus Police Department in an attempt to make the call appear legitimate.
PLEASE REMEMBER:
• The Guernsey County Sheriff’s Office will NEVER call you demanding money for missing jury duty.
• Law enforcement will NEVER ask for payment using gift cards.
• If someone pressures you for immediate payment over the phone, it is likely a scam.
Attached below is a recording of a recent scam call.
Please SHARE this post to help warn your friends and family so they do not become victims.
If you receive one of these calls, do not send money and contact the Guernsey County Sheriff’s Office or your local law enforcement agency to verify the claim.
Stay alert and help us spread the word.

The Guernsey County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Cambridge Police Department, and officers from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, had the opportunity to take on the Guernsey Eagles basketball team last night at the Meadowbrook Elementary School gymnasium.

Players and spectators alike had a fantastic evening filled with fun, laughter, and great community spirit. The Badges team was coached by Sheriff Jeffrey D. Paden. In the end, the Guernsey Eagles came out on top with a 100–59 victory.

All proceeds from the event benefited Guernsey County Night to Shine and the Guernsey County Special Olympics, supporting two incredible programs in our community.

Serving as referees for the evening were Cambridge Mayor Tom Orr and Allen Hunter of State Farm Insurance, while Byesville Mayor Jay Jackson kept the game running smoothly from the scoreboard.

It was a great night bringing the community together for a fun event and a great cause.

Joint CODE Operation leads to arrest of area drug dealer

Sheriff Jeff Paden announced that Guernsey County Sheriff’s Detectives have filed charges against 54-year-old Julie Gebhart of Zanesville, Ohio. Gebhart has been charged with Trafficking in Cocaine, Trafficking in Methamphetamines, possession of cocaine, and possession of methamphetamines, all felonies of the third degree.

These charges stem from a joint operation between the Guernsey County Sheriff’s Office, Cambridge Police Department, and the CODE (Central Ohio Drug Enforcement) Task Force. Detectives began to receive information that narcotics were being trafficked from a motel on John Glenn Highway in Cambridge. Detectives from CPD and the GCSO worked together immediately after receiving this tip.

On Monday, March 9th, Gebhart was observed by detectives at the motel and believed to be involved in the narcotics activity occurring at the business. A short time later, Gebhart was observed leaving the motel and stopped by Deputy Shayne Leggett of the GCSO. Ultimately Dep. Leggett deployed K9 Dagger, who indicated the presence of narcotics inside the vehicle. During a search of Gebhart's vehicle, a significant amount of methamphetamine and cocaine was located. Gebhart also admitted to having more narcotics concealed on her person.

During the preceding follow-up investigation, detectives learned that Gebhart was supplying narcotics to several local individuals who were involved in the trafficking of narcotics.
